German military to form six kamikaze drone units

The German military plans to create six new units to operate kamikaze drones by 2029, with plans for a data-driven, AI-enabled battlefield. The Bundeswehr is testing loitering munitions and aims to field its first medium-range battery by 2027, with further long-range systems to follow.

Dutch military personnel at Volkel Air Base fired at several drones flying over the facility on Friday evening, the Defence Ministry said. F-35 stealth fighters of the Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force are stationed at the air base located near the city of Nijmegen, close to the German border.

Lockheed Martin, General Atomics ASI and L3Harris have completed flight demonstrations in Nevada showing an F-22 pilot issuing in-flight commands to an unmanned aircraft using open-architecture interfaces, software-defined radios and a pilot vehicle interface. The test took place at the Nevada Test and Training Range.

Left-wing politician Jan van Aken has drawn attention by suggesting that young men could use marijuana to avoid Germany’s planned new military service assessments. His party, The Left, is preparing guidance opposing the government’s proposal to evaluate all young men born in 2008 or later for a new voluntary service programme, which could become compulsory if recruitment falls short.

Germany has presented the Leopard 2A8 and Panzerhaubitze 2000 A4 in Munich, with Defence Minister Boris Pistorius outlining the Bundeswehr’s plans for new armoured systems, production requirements and cooperation with European partners. The Bundeswehr has ordered 123 new Leopard 2A8 tanks.

Germany has introduced its first Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, the largest combat aircraft in Bundeswehr service, which replaces the P-3C Orion fleet and will be stationed at Nordholz air base for surveillance and anti-submarine operations across the strategically vital GIUK gap in the North Atlantic. Germany will operate eight Poseidons by 2028, with crews training alongside NATO partners including the US, UK, Norway and Australia.

The European Commission and the High Representative have introduced a military mobility package aimed at enabling fast, coordinated movement of troops across Europe by 2027, alongside a Defence Industry Transformation Roadmap to strengthen innovation and production capacity. The proposals include harmonised cross-border procedures, new emergency transport mechanisms, infrastructure upgrades and measures to accelerate defence technology development across the EU.
