The intransigence of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) at the 13th round of India-China Corps Commander Level Meeting on Sunday blocked progress on resolution of the crisis on the border between the two countries in Eastern Ladakh.

A statement issued by India’s defence ministry said the Indian side ‘made constructive suggestions for resolving the remaining areas but the Chinese side was not agreeable and also could not provide any forward-looking proposals’, and ‘The meeting thus did not result in resolution of the remaining areas’.

“The Indian side pointed out that the situation along the LAC had been caused by unilateral attempts of Chinese side to alter the status quo and in violation of the bilateral agreements. It was therefore necessary that the Chinese side take appropriate steps in the remaining areas so as to restore peace and tranquillity along the LAC in the Western Sector,” said the defence ministry, of the meeting held at Chushul-Moldo on the Chinese-controlled side.

Remarkably, the spokesperson for the PLA’s Western Theater Command, Senior Colonel Long Sahohua said in a statement issed by the Ministy of Defence of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), “Instead of misjudging the situation, the Indian side should cherish the hard-won situation in China-India border areas,” and called Indian suggestions ‘unreasonable and unrealistic demands’.

India’s defence ministry said ‘The two sides have agreed to maintain communications and also to maintain stability on the ground’.
