Gen VK Singh takes guard

General VK Singh is the new Chief of Staff of the Indian Army, having succeeded General Deepak Kapoor. General Singh, is a third generation officer of the Rajput Regiment and was commissioned in the 2 Rajput Regiment, which he also commanded.

The general has served in the Bangladesh War of 1971 and Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka, where he was awarded Yudh Seva Medal.

He is also a graduate of the Defense Services Staff College, Wellington as well as the US Army Rangers Course of the US Army War College.

His previous charges include, command of a counter-insurgency (COIN) force in Jammu and Kashmir, for which he was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal for his distinguished service as General Officer Commanding, as well as the Strike Corps in the Western Sector before becoming the Eastern Army Commander. He was awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal last year.
