HAL, UAC agree to build SJ-100 Jet in India

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Russia’s Public Joint Stock Company United Aircraft Corporation (PJSC-UAC) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Moscow for the production of the SJ-100 civil commuter aircraft in India. The agreement was signed on October 27, 2025, by HAL’s Prabhat Ranjan and UAC’s Oleg Bogomolov, in the presence of HAL Chairman and Managing Director Dr D. K. Sunil and UAC Director General Vadim Badekha.

Under the MoU, HAL will receive rights to manufacture the SJ-100 for Indian domestic operators. HAL said that this marks the first time a complete passenger aircraft will be produced in India since the AVRO HS-748, which was assembled by HAL between 1961 and 1988.

The SJ-100 is a twin-engine, narrow-body regional jet developed by Russia’s Yakovlev (formerly Sukhoi Civil Aircraft). It seats up to 103 passengers, has a range of about 3,530 kilometres, and is designed for short- to medium-haul routes. Over 200 units have been produced to date and are in service with more than 16 airlines. Russia has also begun producing a version of the SJ-100 using entirely domestic systems and engines.

HAL estimates that India will require over 200 regional aircraft in the next decade for domestic routes and an additional 350 for destinations in the Indian Ocean region. The partnership aims to address regional connectivity requirements under India’s UDAN scheme while expanding domestic aerospace manufacturing capacity.
