The Indian Army has signed a contract to procure BvS10 Sindhu All-Terrain Vehicles from Larsen & Toubro (L&T), which is partnering with BAE Systems for the programme. Under the agreement, L&T will manufacture the vehicles at its Armoured Systems Complex in Hazira, while BAE Systems Hägglunds, the original developer of the BvS10, will provide technical and design support. The contract includes an integrated logistics package covering deployment, maintenance and life-cycle sustainment.
The BvS10 Sindhu is a customised variant of the BvS10 articulated vehicle, modified for Indian operating environments. According to the companies, the platform has completed trials in conditions ranging from deserts to high-altitude regions and amphibious settings. The Army intends to use the vehicle for mobility across varied terrains.
Tommy Gustafsson Rask, Managing Director of BAE Systems Hägglunds, said, “The BvS10’s unmatched mobility, flexibility and performance in extreme climatic conditions are critical attributes highlighted by the Indian Army. We are proud to support India’s defence modernisation through this licensing programme, which embodies our commitment to local manufacturing and technology transfer under the Make in India initiative.”
The companies said the programme is expected to support the Army’s operational and logistic mobility requirements across multiple scenarios while contributing to defence industrial production in India.
Arun Ramchandani, Senior Vice President and Head of L&T’s Precision Engineering & Systems, said, “This contract marks a significant milestone in India’s defence landscape under the Make in India initiative and reaffirms L&T’s strengths in systems engineering and manufacturing of defence-critical requirements at industrial scale, complemented by a proven vehicle platform and the global defence credentials of BAE Systems.”
Darren Restarick, Regional Director at BAE Systems Hägglunds, said, “The BvS10 contract and licensing agreement in India reflects the exceptional teamwork of BAE Systems Hägglunds and L&T. This milestone not only lays the foundation for future growth but also marks the first expansion of BvS10 into Asia – underscoring its unrivalled position in the all-terrain, armoured, amphibious market.”
The BvS10 platform is designed for movement across snow, sand, mud, marshland and steep mountain terrain. It is amphibious and can transport personnel, equipment or mission-specific payloads. The system has multiple variants, including personnel carrier, command and control, ambulance, repair and recovery, logistics, and weapons-equipped configurations. The vehicle is in service with several European countries and is on order for Germany.
