Saab has received an order worth approximately SEK 1.5 billion from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for its Trackfire Remote Weapon Station (RWS), the company said in a press release issued on January 9. Deliveries under the contract are scheduled to take place between 2026 and 2028. Saab said the order was booked in the fourth quarter of 2025.
According to the company, the FMV order will support the Swedish Army and the Amphibious Battalion 2030 programme. Amphibious Battalion 2030 is an ongoing defence initiative focused on developing future amphibious capabilities within the Swedish Armed Forces.
The order includes the Trackfire ARES (Aerial Response) Remote Weapon Station, which is equipped with a 30×113 mm M230LF Bushmaster chain gun as its primary weapon. Saab said this configuration is intended to provide counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) capability.
“We are honoured that Trackfire RWS has been selected as a crucial part of the future capabilities for the Swedish amphibious forces and the Swedish Army. This order reflects our commitment to delivering state-of-the-art solutions that meet the evolving needs of modern defence. Trackfire RWS, with its precision and adaptability, will be a vital asset in enhancing operational effectiveness,” said Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab’s business area Surveillance.
Trackfire RWS is a fully stabilised, remotely operated dual-weapon station designed for use on naval vessels, land vehicles and stationary defence positions. Saab said the system can fire accurately while on the move and integrates sensors and weapons to support engagement of ground and aerial targets.
The system uses a stabilised independent line-of-sight configuration, which allows the sensor module to operate separately from weapon movement. Saab said this design enables operators to maintain continuous tracking of a target during engagement and supports ballistic calculations that include three-dimensional target prediction.
Saab said Trackfire RWS has been developed to integrate with a wide range of platforms and military systems, allowing for different levels of integration depending on user requirements. The company said the system can be fitted with a variety of weapons, including heavy machine guns, medium-calibre cannons and grenade launchers, as well as non-kinetic effectors such as jammers.
According to Saab, Trackfire RWS is already in service with the Finnish Border Guard and the armed forces of Finland, Sweden and other countries, supporting both land-based and amphibious or naval operations.
