South Korea has indicated an interest in joining the Escort Convoy Coordination exercise run by the navies of India, China and Japan to protect merchant shipping in the Gulf of Aden against piracy.
The original tri-nation coordination began last January and in the first two instances, the Chinese, and then the Indian navies provided their deployment schedules around which the other two respective navies worked out their deployments.
Beginning July, the vessels from the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force will provide a schedule, around which the Indian and Chinese navies will work out their deployment.
The Indian Navy’s frigate, INS Tabar, is currently in the region for the tasking.
