ICEYE has signed a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration to deliver sovereign space-based intelligence capabilities to the Swedish Armed Forces, the company said in a statement issued on January 12. The multi-year, multi-million agreement covers the delivery of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites, data, software and supporting ground systems.

The contract was signed in Stockholm by Brigadier General Carl-Fredrik Edström, Director of the Air and Space Systems Division at Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), and Seppo Aaltonen, Vice President for Nordics and NATO at ICEYE.

Under the agreement, Sweden will establish a sovereign space-based intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capability. The Swedish Armed Forces will own and operate the system, retaining control over satellite tasking, data access and operational use for national defence and security purposes.

ICEYE’s SAR satellites are designed to provide high-resolution imagery regardless of weather or lighting conditions. The system can collect data day or night and through cloud cover, rain and snow, which are frequent conditions in northern Europe. According to the company, the satellites can deliver imagery with ground resolution of up to 16 centimetres.

The ISR capability is intended to support Sweden’s national defence requirements as well as operations across the Nordics, the Arctic region and NATO’s north-eastern flank. The press release said the investment forms part of Sweden’s wider defence and security strategy and its ongoing rearmament programme.

The agreement also reflects a broader shift in European and NATO defence planning toward more resilient, space-based intelligence systems with higher revisit rates, intended to support faster operational decision-making.

Seppo Aaltonen said, “ICEYE is proud to partner with the Swedish Armed Forces and deliver sovereign space-based ISR capabilities that work in all weather and lighting conditions of Northern Europe and Arctic. We especially welcome cooperation with Sweden and our closest Nordic NATO allies to enhance the security and resilience of the North-Eastern Flank of NATO.”

ICEYE said its technology allows interoperability with allied nations if Sweden chooses to share capacity, enabling coordinated use of space-based intelligence among partners.
