
The troops were part of the UN Mission in South Sudan. Five other Indian army personnel were also injured. The casualties belonged to the Indian Army’s 6 Mahar and 9 Mechanized Infantry regiments.
India has been elected to the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member, along with four other countries on Tuesday. In the first round, India got 187 votes, the highest number of the winning candidates, South Africa got 182 and both Pakistan and Swaziland got 01 vote each, presumably their own.
The Indian contingent, collectively known as INDBATT, diffused the situation through mediation and got the demonstrators to withdraw. The Indian Army asserts that the actions of the Indian peacekeepers was in conformity with UNIFIL Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
