The U.S. Pentagon has launched GenAI.mil, a new artificial intelligence platform that places generative AI tools directly onto the desktops of military personnel, civilians and contractors across the Pentagon and U.S. military installations worldwide. The launch includes the deployment of Google Cloud’s Gemini for Government as the platform’s first operational model, with additional U.S.-built frontier AI systems to follow.
According to the Department, the rollout fulfills a directive issued in July by President Donald Trump mandating measures towards AI adoption. The War Department said the new platform is intended to build an “AI-first” workforce and accelerate adoption of automated workflows across operations, research and administration.
Emil Michael, Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering, said the initiative reflects the Department’s push to dominate emerging AI technologies. “There is no prize for second place in the global race for AI dominance,” he said. “We are moving rapidly to deploy powerful AI capabilities like Gemini for Government directly to our workforce. AI is America’s next Manifest Destiny, and we’re ensuring that we dominate this new frontier.”
The launch follows an internal rollout at the Pentagon, where some employees initially questioned the legitimacy of the pop-up prompt that introduced the tool. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth later confirmed the platform’s authenticity, writing to all personnel, “I am pleased to introduce GenAI.mil, a secure generative AI platform for every member of the Department of War,” adding, “It is live today and available on the desktops of all military personnel, civilians and contractors. With this launch we are taking a giant step toward mass AI adoption across the department. This tool marks the beginning of a new era where every member of our workforce can be more efficient and impactful.”
The GenAI.mil platform supports controlled unclassified information (CUI) and Impact Level 5 (IL5) data, enabling it to be used in operational settings. Gemini for Government provides natural language interaction, retrieval-augmented generation and grounding to Google Search to reduce errors. The Department is also offering no-cost training to all employees to accelerate adoption.
Hegseth emphasized that AI tools are expected to become part of daily operations. “I expect every member of the department to log in, learn it and incorporate it into your workflows immediately,” he wrote. “AI should be in your battle rhythm every single day. It should be your teammate.”
The AI system itself outlined potential applications in response to an internal query, citing capabilities such as document drafting, research support, satellite image analysis and software code auditing.
