The UK government has allocated £200 million to prepare its armed forces for a possible deployment to Ukraine as part of the Multinational Force for Ukraine (MNFU), according to a statement published by the Ministry of Defence. The funding was announced by Defence Secretary John Healey during a visit to Ukraine.
The funding is intended to support preparations for a potential deployment, including upgrades to vehicles, communications systems, counter-drone protection and additional force-protection equipment. The Ministry of Defence said the funding has been drawn from the core defence budget and will be used during the current financial year.
The announcement follows a declaration of intent signed earlier this week in Paris by the leaders of the UK, France and Ukraine. The declaration confirmed that UK and French forces would deploy to Ukraine in the event of a peace agreement.
John Healey said, “As we approach the fifth year of Putin’s full-scale invasion, the Ukrainians continue to fight with huge courage – civilians and military alike. We are surging investment into our preparations following the Prime Minister’s announcement this week, ensuring that Britain’s Armed Forces are ready to deploy, and lead, the Multinational Force Ukraine, because a secure Ukraine means a secure UK. As we look towards a potential peace deal, we continue to step up for Ukraine in the fight today – strengthening its air defences while backing British industry, jobs and innovation at home.”
During the visit, Healey met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Defence Minister Denys Shmyhal to discuss military planning for the MNFU. He was accompanied by the most senior UK general assigned to the MNFU headquarters, which is already operating in Paris.
The Ministry of Defence also said that production of British-built Octopus interceptor drones will begin this month. The drones are designed to counter Shahed-type attacks and are intended for mass production. The UK plans to manufacture thousands of these drones each month for use in Ukraine as part of wider air defence support.
