India and Sri Lanka conducted the fourth edition of the bilateral diving exercise IN–SLN DIVEX 2026 in Colombo from April 21 to 28. 2026, focusing on underwater operations and interoperability between the two navies.

The exercise involved participation from the Indian Navy, including the Diving Support and Submarine Rescue Vessel INS Nireekshak, along with diving teams from the Sri Lankan Navy. The activity aimed to improve coordination in underwater search, rescue, and salvage operations.

The programme included deep-sea diving drills and mixed gas diving operations conducted in harbour and open-sea conditions. Divers from both navies carried out dives beyond 55 metres, including operations over World War-era wrecks such as SS Worcester and SS Perseus off the coast of Colombo.

Rear Admiral S.J. Kumara, Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Area, visited INS Nireekshak during the exercise. He reviewed the activities and acknowledged the training engagement between the two navies.

In addition to operational drills, personnel from both sides took part in joint activities including a beach clean-up drive at Galle Face, sports events, and yoga sessions. These activities were conducted alongside the technical training programme.

The Commanding Officer of INS Nireekshak also visited the IPKF Memorial in Sri Lanka and laid a wreath in honour of Indian personnel who served during the Indian Peace Keeping Force operations.

As part of broader cooperation, two BHISM cubes were handed over under India’s Aarogya Maitri initiative. These are intended to support medical preparedness and disaster response efforts.

INS Nireekshak received a ceremonial send-off at the conclusion of the exercise. IN–SLN DIVEX is conducted as part of ongoing engagement between India and Sri Lanka to strengthen coordination in the maritime domain.
