The Indian Navy has received Taragiri (Yard 12653), the fourth Nilgiri-class (Project 17A) stealth frigate, following its delivery by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilding Ltd (MDL) on 28 November 2025 in Mumbai. The ship is the third Project 17A vessel constructed by MDL. According to the Navy, the Project 17A frigates are intended to serve as multi-mission platforms for a range of maritime roles.
The new frigate carries the name of the former INS Taragiri, a Leander-class vessel that served in the Navy from May 16, 1980 to June 27, 2013. The Project 17A design was developed by the Warship Design Bureau and construction was overseen by the Warship Overseeing Team in Mumbai.
Project 17A ships incorporate an updated weapon and sensor suite compared to the Shivalik-class. They use Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion with diesel engines and gas turbines driving controllable pitch propellers, along with an Integrated Platform Management System.
Weapons and sensors fitted on Taragiri include BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles, MFSTAR radar, the MRSAM system, a 76 mm gun, 30 mm and 12.7 mm close-in weapon systems, and anti-submarine rockets and torpedoes.
The Navy said Taragiri is the fourth Project 17A frigate delivered in the past 11 months. The vessel’s build period was 81 months, compared to 93 months for the lead ship Nilgiri. Three remaining Project 17A vessels — one at MDL and two at GRSE — are scheduled for delivery by August 2026.
