Leonardo has reported the first successful air defence test associated with its recently launched Michelangelo Security Dome, less than ten days after the programme was formally unveiled. The company announced that on December 03, 2025, the first qualification launch of the Italian SAMP/T NG surface-to-air missile was conducted using Leonardo’s KRONOS Grand Mobile High Power radar.
According to Leonardo, the radar—built on an active electronically scanned array (AESA) architecture—tracked the target and guided the interceptor to a hit at a distance not previously achieved during land-based trials of the Eurosam SAMP/T system. The company said that the performance demonstrates the radar’s capabilities for air and missile defence missions.
Leonardo said the test reinforces earlier results from international integrated air and missile defence exercises, including Formidable Shield and Pacific Dragon, as well as live-fire surface-to-air missile trials. The company added that the milestone aligns with the development path of the Michelangelo Security Dome, which is designed as an open, modular architecture intended to support integrated European air and missile defence.
