Leonardo has introduced the “Michelangelo Dome,” an integrated multi-domain defence architecture designed to counter a range of emerging threats. The system was presented on 27 November at the Officine Farneto in Rome by Leonardo Chief Executive Officer and General Manager Roberto Cingolani.

According to Leonardo, the Michelangelo Dome is intended to provide protection for critical infrastructure, urban areas, and assets of national and European interest. The system is described as modular, open and scalable, forming part of the company’s broader strategy in the global security sector.

Cingolani said, “With Michelangelo, Leonardo reaffirms its commitment to developing solutions that safeguard citizens, institutions, and infrastructure by combining advanced technology, a systemic vision, and strong industrial capabilities. In a world where threats evolve rapidly and become ever more complex – and where defending is costlier than attacking – defence must innovate, anticipate, and embrace international cooperation.”

The system integrates land, naval, air and space sensors, cyber-defence platforms, command-and-control systems, artificial intelligence and effectors. Leonardo stated that the architecture creates a security dome capable of detecting and responding to aerial and missile threats — including hypersonic systems and drone swarms — as well as surface and subsurface maritime attacks and hostile ground activity. The platform uses data fusion and predictive algorithms to anticipate hostile actions and coordinate countermeasures.

Leonardo said the project supports European efforts toward strategic autonomy, technological resilience and greater integration of defence capabilities within both the EU and NATO.
