Tributes pour in after CDS Gen Bipin Rawat and 12 others die in IAF helicopter crash in southern India

Tributes poured in from around the world after India’s Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat and 12 others died in an Indian Air Force (IAF) Mi-17V5 helicopter crash in the Nilgiris in the southern Indian Tamil Nadu state on Wednesday.

General Rawat was accompanied by his wife Madhulika Rawat, Defence Assistant Brigadier Lakhbinder Singh Lidder, Staff Officer Lieutenant Colonel Harjinder Singh, Havaldar Satpal Rai, Naik Gursewak Singh, Naik Jitender Kumar, Lance Naik Vivek Kumar and Lance Naik B. Sai Teja. The IAF flight crew of the helicopter commanded by Wing Commander Prithvi Singh Chauhan, included Squadron Leader Kuldeep Singh, Junior Warrant Officer Rana Pratap Das and Junior Warrant Officer Arakkal Pradeep. The sole survivior, Group Captain Varun Singh, Directing Staff at DSSC, who had incidentally been awarded the Shaurya Chakra on Independence Day, ‘is currently under treatment at Military Hospital, Wellington’, according to the IAF.

General Rawat was flying from the IAF base at Sulur to the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) at Wellington, when the helicopter crashed at around 12:20 pm on Wednesday. The IAF confirmed the demise of the CDS and 12 others onboard, a little past 6 pm.

Following the announcement, condolences and tributes poured in for the deceased military personnel from India and around the world.

President Ramnath Kovind said, “I am shocked and anguished over the untimely demise of Gen. Bipin Rawat and his wife, Madhulika ji. The nation has lost one of its bravest sons. His four decades of selfless service to the motherland was marked by exceptional gallantry and heroism. My condolences to his family. It’s deeply painful for me to learn of the loss of lives in the chopper crash. I join the fellow citizens in paying tributes to each of those who died while performing their duty. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, ” I am deeply anguished by the helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu in which we have lost Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife and other personnel of the Armed Forces. They served India with utmost diligence. My thoughts are with the bereaved families.”

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said in a statement on Wednesday, “Deeply anguished by the sudden demise of Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife and 11 other Armed Forces personnel in an extremely unfortunate helicopter accident today in Tamil Nadu. His untimely death is an irreparable loss to our Armed Forces and the country. General Rawat had served the country with exceptional courage and diligence. As the first Chief of Defence Staff he had prepared plans for jointness of our Armed Forces. My heart goes out to the families of those who lost their loved ones in this accident. Praying for the speedy recovery of Gp Capt Varun Singh, who is currently under treatment at the Military Hospital, Wellington.”

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh informed Parliament of the chain of events on Thursday, saying, “The Air Force Mi 17 V 5 helicopter took off from Sulur Air Base at 11:48 AM yesterday and was expected to land at Wellington by 12:15 PM. Air Traffic Control at Sulur Air Base lost contact with the helicopter at approximately 12:08 PM. Subsequently, few locals spotted a fire in the forest near Coonoor and rushed to the spot where they observed the wreckage of military helicopter engulfed in flames.”

He also said a tri-service inquiry that had been ordered into the crash. The Flight Data Recorder of the helicopter has been recovered. The mortal remains of the deceased are expected to arrive in Delhi later on Thursday.

Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar and the chiefs of the three services sent messages on the sudden demise, in addition to others in the defence establishment.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also expressed his condolences.
