Embraer has completed a cold-weather demonstration campaign of its KC-390 Millennium transport aircraft in Sweden, testing its performance in Arctic conditions. The campaign was conducted at the Vidsel Test Range, a military facility used for evaluating operations in low temperatures.
The trials focused on the aircraft’s ability to operate in conditions associated with northern Europe and Arctic environments. During the campaign, the KC-390 carried out rapid engine start procedures and executed short takeoffs and landings. The aircraft also demonstrated cargo handling by loading and deploying heavy vehicles, including SISU GTT all-terrain vehicles, while maintaining capacity for personnel and additional equipment.

According to the company, the tests were intended to evaluate the aircraft’s suitability for missions requiring rapid deployment and logistical support in challenging environments. The campaign also assessed its compatibility with Agile Combat Employment (ACE) concepts, which emphasise flexible and dispersed operations.
“The KC-390 Millennium demonstrated once again its versatility and its ability to successfully perform the most demanding missions under the toughest conditions, all with 100% reliability. This next-generation aircraft, which is fully compatible with the Agile Combat Employment concept, represents an unbeatable combination for operations in Northern Europe and the Arctic,” said Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO, Embraer Defense & Security.

The KC-390 is a medium transport and tanker aircraft designed to perform a range of missions, including airlift, aerial refuelling and logistics support. The aircraft is intended to operate from a variety of airfields and support rapid deployment requirements.
The cold-weather campaign forms part of ongoing efforts to demonstrate the aircraft’s operational envelope and support its use in different geographic and climatic conditions.
